Mammoth Mountain Ski Report Feb. 27, 2011 for Mammoth Ski Club

Mammoth Mountain from June Mountain.

Today we had cold air temperatures, brilliant sunshine, and feather light powder. Mammoth looked awesome with its 12-18.5 foot snow base. 32-50″ of new light powder fell with this last storm. The photo above is what Mammoth Mountain Ski resort looked like this morning. We have been blessed with soooo much snow recently!

I skied with my friend at June Mountain in the trees all day today, and it was awesome. Even the face of June was excellent with alot of areas that had no tracks, yet. The winds were down, but the temperatures were really cold this moring. I wore 3 layers on top and 2 on bottom, a fleece balaclava and down mittens. By lunch I was ready to lose the 3rd layer on top, so I put it in a locker.

June Mountain is a really cool place to ski. The tickets, lockers and food are less than the same thing at Mammoth. My apple was $1.08 instead of $1.80. June Mountain has a real small town feel, and spectacular views from the mid-chalet. The view always reminds me of the Austrian Alps. Stunningly gorgeous!

June mountain is great if you like to ski powder in the trees, or if you have a family or intermediate skiers. Their terrain is very skier friendly, and most of the time there is tons of space on the immaculately groomed runs. I made 1 last run down the face to the car, and skier’s left had untouched powder in the trees and the glades.

We hit my favorite restaurant in June, the Tiger Bar for their excellent bacon cheddar burger with Tiger chips. The I spotted some fresh tracks on the way home in a backcountry bowl. Check out the lines this guy got:

Can you name this bowl?

If you can name this bowl, you win a prize. Do you have any photos you took or stories from today? Send them to me, OK? The snow is awesome, and more is due on Tuesday/Wednesday so enjoy!
