It was a beautifully sunny day at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort, and the best part was there was no wind all day. I got to the bottom of chair 2 at 9: am, and it was already pretty carvable on Chump Alley. I skied that a few times, then switched to Broadway which was still too firm.
So I tried Center Bowl on chair 3 which was just softening up. That was worth 3 laps until I could tell that the top was soft enough to attack. J1 &2’s were practicing today, and the Olympians are scheduled to be here for the next 9 days.
The crowds were light, so I was able to walk onto the gondola at McCoy station. I skied Cornice which was groomed and carvable with no icy spots any where. That was fun for 3 laps. Then I did MJB’s from the peak, skier’s left. That was good and smooth directly below, but when I ventured under Varmits and Hangman’s, it was icy and rough so I detoured back to Cornice.
The Cornice to McCoy Station lap was worthy up until about 12:30 when it got too soft. But a 3.5 hour window of good skiing is good enough for me, especially this time of year when most resorts are closed!
