Mammoth Mountain Ski Report May 25, 2011 for Mammoth Ski Club

I skied yesterday, and got to the mountain about 9: am. The snow base has increased to 11-19 feet with the 3 feet of snow that fell last week. The snow was still firm, and I was surprised how brisk the wind was. I always carry my fleece balaclava in my ski jacket pocket, and the chill encouraged me to put it on on my first chair ride up Chump Alley.

It wasn’t boilerplate, but it was firmer than I prefer, so I stayed on chair 2 and followed the track the cat makes up from the bottom of chair 2 every morning. That 8 foot wide track was totally carvable down Mambo.

By about 10: am the snow had softened, and was really fun with the light crowds. I took a break about 10: 30, then hit Center Bowl off chair 3 which was still too firm.

In the “old days” when Dave McCoy ran the mountain, they would groom so they finished just before the skiers and boarders arrived, so the snow would be soft. But now they groom after closing which gives the snow time to freeze solid, reducing the visitors experience. I believe this is a mistake in management of the mountain, but all my complaints about this have fallen on deaf ears.

This time of year you definately have to stick to the groomed runs, so I ventured up the upper gondola and tried Cornice. Cornice was nice the whole way down, and I connected that with runs on the back of chair 1 to make it a top to bottom run. I did that same lap 4 times, and it was really fun. I kept skiing until 2: pm, and it would have been good until closing.

Today it is forecast to be windy, so I am planning on skiing next on Thursday. (Pray for fresh powder again) Here’s the forecast for the next few days:
